How long have you been in the beauty industry?
I graduated esthetics school in May 2008, so over 16 years now!
What inspired you to become an esthetician?
I always loved makeup, and all things beauty and fashion. I was working in the fitness industry when a friend (who was applying for hair school at the time) suggested I check out the Esthetics program. When I saw all the skincare courses I became really intrigued – I had struggled with acne for most of my adolescent life, so the idea of learning how to care for my own skin, and then be able to help others do the same really spoke to me, and the rest is history!
Why did you decide to start your own business?
I had been struggling to grow my career where I was, and despite my best efforts to focus more on my passion – treating skin – I felt like I wasn’t being taken seriously working in the back room of a hair salon to be honest. I was doing a lot of manis and pedis, and waxing, and I started to realize I wanted more control over my career, my guests’ experience, and my work culture, and quite honestly, just woke up one day and said, “F*** it – why not open my own space where I can do all the things I want to do?!” Brows and brazilians were the bread and butter that I built my skincare business on, and still continue to be a huge part of my business, but I haven’t touched another nail since I left there!
What's your favorite service to perform and why?
Microneedling! I just love the way it transforms the skin and after completing Dr. Setterfield’s training, it transformed everything about the way that I look at and treat the skin. It’s just such an amazing treatment for anyone and everyone!
What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced while running your own business? How do you cope?
Learning how to budget for everything and manage the ebbs and flows of the business. Changes of the season, changes in staff, changes with products, services and trends… I work with a business coach (shout out to Dan at Strategies!) who has helped me immensely! But honestly, it has come down to a ton of personal growth and development, learning how to become a better leader for my team – I’m still learning!
What is one business tool that you can't live without?
My booking system. I know we all have a love-hate relationship with these softwares, but honestly, between the scheduling, the reporting, the client file keeping – it tells me everything I need to know about what’s going on in my business!
How and when did you discover Bushbalm Skincare? Why did you decide to carry us?
A friend recommended Bushbalm during the pandemic. I was on a mission to switch my inventory to support as many Canadian brands as possible, and I was on the hunt for a line of post waxing/sugaring products that also had great branding that aligned with my studio’s aesthetic.
Which Bushbalm product is most popular at your salon? Why do you think that is?
Roller Rescue! It’s super easy to use, it’s eco-friendly with the refills, and it’s honestly the perfect solution to treating and preventing ingrown hairs, while also soothing the skin! I tell everyone it’s magic!
What do you enjoy most about the Bushbalm Pro community?
I love the inclusivity and the continued innovation! And everyone at the company is so friendly!
What advice would you give to new estheticians entering the field right now?
Learn as much as you can from others! There is still so much to learn after you graduate so spend your early years gaining as much knowledge and experience as you possibly can. Find your mentor(s). There’s an Esthetician on almost every corner in most cities, but become a master of your craft and you will gain the respect of your community and your clients, and you will become irreplaceable. And truthfully, I’d give the same advice to Estheticians who have been in the field for 10 or even 20 years too. Never stop learning!
